Kurara is a unique enterprise owned and operated by elderly ladies of the community. The Kurara building was originally a farm house and is about 150 years old. Mrs. Aomori, an energetic leader in the local community of elderly housewives, heard that it was slated to be torn down. She assembled a group of concerned middle-aged and older ladies and created an enterprise that purchased the farmhouse and turned it into a business.
The farmhouse now acts as a retail shop for local craftspeople whose goods vary from leather purses to decorations made from old kimono. They also server lunch three days a week. The preparers are local ladies over the age of 65 that create a menu for the day based on what they have decided amongst themselves. The served meals are really authentic Japanese homemade cooking. And it goes without saying that the meals are really delicious!
The price for lunch is only ¥500.As you may imagine, the place is extremely popular and lunch is often sold out in 30 minutes or less. So best make your way there a little bit before 12 if you want to enjoy some true country cooking!
Kurara is opened everyday of the week except Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00.Meals are only served on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
