From day one, the question at the top of everyone's list here in Japan as far as questions are concerned is what is the situation with Trump?
The fact that the Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, was visiting with him at the same time I returned to Japan probably had a lot to do with the amount of interest shown in the topic.
Nonetheless, the belligerent attitude that Trump has taken vis-a-vis the rest of the world has obviously rocked the relationships that have been carefully built over the past 80 post WWII years.
I can see that a person who has built a successful career based on taking old properties, tearing down the buildings within the property and the building new structures on them has acquired and shaped the attitude and point-of-view that Trump holds.
But to assume that the same attitude and point-of-view is applicable to all other situations is highy questionable.
But this is the way that I try to explain it to those Japanese that ask me why, what, and HUH?
Most politicians of any nation make pre-election promises that nobody really believes that the person being elected will every fulfil.
This time in America, Trump got elected because (1) a large number of people got fed up with promises being made and not fulfilled. (2) simultaneously, another large group of people got fed with with the standard quo and felt that Trump would shake up things and would not really keep his promises either.
To the delight of the first group, Trump has turned out to be one of the most honest "politicians" in that he did/is attempting to keep his promises.
To the dismay of the second group, Trump has turned out to be one of the most honest "politicians" in that he did/is attempting to keep his promises.
To the rest of the Americans who did not vote for him, well, they are just dismayed.
NOTE: I did not make any references to any other candidates running for the last election other than the word politician and am not interested in hearing that some other politician also lied and so on blah, blah blah. No one in Japan asked me about any other candidate and I am not interested either so keep any comments non-related to the content of this blog to yourself. Thanks.
